DAHRT FAQ

wheelchairWhat is DAHRT?

green bullet DAHRT is an acronym for Disabled Americans Have Rights Too.

wheelchairWhat is the purpose of DAHRT?

green bullet DAHRT is an organization comprised of people with and without disabilities dedicated to the equality of all causes involving people with disabilities, their rights and the implementation of the A.D.A. (Americans with Disabilities Act).

wheelchairDoes it cost anything to join DAHRT?

green bullet We ask for a $10.00 yearly donation toward the costs of postage, mailings, meeting costs, publications on the ADA and miscellaneous items related to running of the organization. We pay rent and utilities at our office, but all help is voluntary. If you cannot afford the $10.00, DAHRT has sponsorships available.

wheelchairWhat do I get if I join DAHRT?

green bullet The opportunity to meet other people with disabilities, a quarterly newsletter, monthly meetings, updated information on the ADA laws, help with your disability questions and problems, involvement in disability issues and understanding about the real problems facing people with disabilities in America today.

wheelchairDo I have to be disabled to join?

green bullet No. We need the support of both the disabled and able-bodied communities. However, our group focuses the majority of its time and energy on issues concerning the disabled.

wheelchairIs DAHRT a "non-profit" organization?

green bullet Yes. We have our 501(c)(3) status.

wheelchairWhy should I join DAHRT?

green bullet The world is not a "Disabled Friendly or Accessible" place for those of use with disabilities. DAHRT is very involved in the community with people and business to try and change attitudes as well as accessibility. Our goal is to make the world a much more accessible place for people with disabilities, and change negative views of the disabled to positive acceptance of all peoples.

wheelchairWhat is the Butterfly Brigade?

green bullet The Butterfly Brigade is a branch of DAHRT which collects stuffed animals and distributes them to children in hospitals.  The first 27 stuffed animals were delivered to kids at Children's Hospital in October 1998.  These stuffed animals bring joy to children who are ill and in need of something to lift their spirits.  Click here for more information.

wheelchairWhat is the DAHRT Christmas Party about?

green bullet The DAHRT Christmas Party is a means to allow kids and young adults with disabilities a chance to spend time with other people with disabilities, and to meet Santa Claus.  Our very own "Santa Woody" uses a wheelchair too, and the kids love him.  Click here to learn more about the Christmas Party, how you can get involved, and how to invite a child.

wheelchairWhat do I do if a business is not accessible?

green bullet DAHRT has a form letter which you can use to remind businesses that they are not in compliance with the ADA.   If you still have difficulties, contact DAHRT for further assistance.
